A household name on the lip of Nigerian community in Cameroon is Eze Gburugburu 1 of Ndi Igbo, widely respected as accommodating, tolerant and urbane. ISMAIL ADEGBOLA writes.
The proximity of Nigeria to Cameroon, and the level of cooperation currently existing between the two nations, have encouraged the influx of Nigerians into Cameroon with majority of the over four million Nigerians engaging in legitimate business interests.
Given their hard-working nature and resilience, these Nigerians record success in their businesses, and are actively involved in the development of their host communities as constitutionally expected of them.
One of such enterprising Nigerians in Cameroon is His Majesty Jonathan Onyengubo (Eze Gburugburu 1 of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo) who is a household name owing to his numerous philanthropic and humanitarian gestures.
Long before his coronation as the Eze Gburugburu 1 Ohaneze Ndi Igbo some five years ago, the then Jonathan Onyengubo had distinguished himself among his fellow countrymen and women resident in the length and breadth of Cameroon.
His outstanding character on and off his office naturally endeared him to Nigerian nationals, including Yorubas and other Nigerian ethnic groups, thus becoming a rallying point of sorts to them. The leadership quality he effortlessly exhibited at social gatherings could hardly be rivaled.
Hence, during selection exercise, it was not difficult to make him the choice for the exalted post of Eze Gburugburu 1 Ndi Igbo. And since he ascended the throne, he has impacted positively and added value and elevated that revered stool to the admiration of the host communities.
He has spared no efforts in writing his name in the good books in Cameroon and beyond. His philanthropic works have carried him into the Central Prison of Buea where he single-handedly paid millions of francs CFA to free tens of prisoners who were still held back in prison by their inability to pay their release fines. It was a gesture that had never been seen before in the Buea Central Prison, and it was loudly applauded by both Cameroonian and Nigerian officials.
Remarkably, His Majesty is an ever presence in community development projects, be it in his host community or in his home community; he has actively participated in the acquisition of a vast piece of land for the construction of an ‘’Igbo village’’ in the Tiko Sub-Division, South West Region of Cameroon.
Upon construction, the village, which will also comprise of a ranch (Animals like horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, and birds like the Holland duck and peacocks are already being reared on the land), pool, and a guest house, will serve not just the Nigerian community in Cameroon, but also the entire Cameroonian population.
He is a peace-maker, who is noted for settling disputes amongst Nigerians and Cameroonians alike; he has been at the heart of peace in several communities and in homes in Cameroon, obtaining wide recognition from several organizations from across the globe.
He is a role model to young Cameroonians and Nigerians alike, supporting them in their bid to become independent and successful.
The Eze Gburugburu 1 of Ohaneze is that one Nigerian who has completely captured the hearts of the people of Cameroon and its government, and always say that he is still very much ready to do more in his bid to see that all humans are comfortable and living in peace and harmony.
With a range of selfless services he has so far done in Cameroon and back home in Nigeria, he has paved a clear path for his future as a Nigerian to watch in the ongoing efforts to further integrate African countries.
The EZE GBURU GBURU 1 of OHANEZE NDI IGBO is a household name in Cameroon thanks to his numerous philanthropic and humanitarian gestures.
