A Ghanaian lady Afua Asantewaa Aduonum has successfully ended the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual, exceeding the previous record set by India’s Sunil Waghmare.
Commencing her musical marathon dubbed “afuaasantewaasingathon” on midnight December 24, 2023, Afua Asantewaa’s journey spanned five days and a few hours, incorporating various positions such as standing, lying down, sitting, and squatting.

Undiscouraged by the physical challenges, Afua concluded the marathon on Friday, December 29, 2023, at midnight, accumulating 126 hours of continuous singing.
Afua’s achievement eclipses the official record of 105 hours held by Sunil Waghmare, the renowned Indian singer. Unofficially, she sang for 126 hours and 52 minutes, surpassing Waghmare’s mark by an additional 21 hours.

Sunil Waghmare, who achieved fame in 2012 as the Guinness World Record holder for the longest singing marathon, started his musical journey at 14. Unlike Sunil, Afua is not a professional musician but only has a passion for music, local media reports.

Riding on the wave of the success, Spyro released a remix of the song featuring Tiwa Savage in March 2023. The visuals for the song have amassed an impressive 112 million views on YouTube.
At the AFRIMMA Awards 2023, ‘Who is your Guy?’ won the ‘Best Collaboration’ category. Capitalising on his success, Spyro announced his UK and Europe tour in May 2023, spanning 12 cities in the UK and approximately 20 European cities. Nigerian singer, Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael, popularly known as Zlatan Ibile, has revealed how meeting Olamide changed the trajectory of his life.
He said his 2017 collaborative song with Olamide, ‘My Body’ was the turning point of his career after the YBNL boss gave him a verse.
Zlatan shared his testimony while speaking in a recent interview with popular YouTuber, Korty EO.
He said, “Olamide giving me a verse at that time was life-changing for me. I was always tracking him and begging him in the DM for a verse.
“He gave me appointments twice but they didn’t materialise until the third time. He invited me to his house and because I was doing more rap, I thought we would be doing a rap song, then all of a sudden, Olamide started singing an Afrobeats song, ‘My Body.’ He did that because he knew it was what would make me an instant star.
“I recorded my verse and that was how my story changed.”
Afua Asantewaa : the Ghanaian lady set to break Guinness world record
Ghana’s Afua Asantewaa Aduonum is on a journey to break a world record for the longest individual singing marathon.
In her attempt to break the Guinness world record by Sunil Waghmare, an Indian who sang for 105 hours in March 2012, Afua has been singing Ghanaian songs back-to-back at the Akwaaba village.
Afua’s journey which commenced at midnight on December 24 is expected to end on December 27, which means she will be singing non-stop for 4 days 9 hours.
The mother of 2 has been performing Ghanaian songs back to back at the Akwaaba village where an number of Ghanaians including A-list musicians and politicians have gathered to support her.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia was also there to throw in his support.
Afua’s attempt comes a few days after some Ghanaian musicians called for promoting Ghanaian songs during the Yuletide.
The event-leading trends across the social media space in Ghana appear to have made the 2023 Christmas in Ghana a memorable experience.
Many social media users and patrons of the mini-event have all commended Afua for her effort.
